I have loved clay ever since my first ceramics class at the Children's Museum in Rocky Mount, NC, when I was seven! I am most interested in hand building and made my first “spirit” while doing an art project with my daughters.
My spirits are benevolent and whimsical characters that offer encouragement, joy, delight, protection and happiness. Some are more mysterious and others are humorous, but all spread good energy.
My “spirits” are made of stoneware. I rolls slabs, add texture, iron oxide and then three coats of hand-painted glaze. I adorn these clay forms with shells I collect from beaches in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida beaches. I add feathers that I find or that are given to me, upcycled jewelry and other treasures, many from the Scrap Exchange in Durham. Sometimes I back my pieces with cedar limbs or driftwood.
I hope you will visit Womancraft soon to see my “spirits” in person! I think the best way to find yours is to hold them in your hands and let it speak to you!
