Longleaf Pine Needle Basket - Plectranthus Leaf
Hand coiled baskets made with longleaf pine needles are a tradition in North Carolina. The pine needles in this basket feature two colors or tones. The green needles came from a tree in my yard. The golden needles are from a golden long leaf pine that grows in South America.
I made this basket using a universal basket-making technique called coiling. To make the coils, I use a continuous stitch to sew together small bundles of pine needles using dyed hemp cord and gold cording. I then stack the coils to form the basket.
The bottom of this basket is a pottery disk specially made for me by my sister. It has an imprint of a leaf from a Plectranthus or Spur Flower plant. The center disk measures approximately 4.5 inches in diameter.
To preserve the colors, do not display in direct sunlight.
